Military Ethics – A Type of Applied Ethics
(Relevant for Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)
During the Balakot air strikes and even prior to that, the notion of “surgical strikes” brought military ethics into the spotlight. But what does this mean when two professional armies from sovereign nations are in confrontation? Military ethics pertain to inquiries about the use of force and the moral principles guiding soldiers, often seen as a branch of applied professional ethics. The framework of Just War theory typically establishes the foundational principles of military ethics. Nonetheless, different countries and traditions place emphasis on varying aspects within this field.
Military ethics involves multiple sub-areas, including the following among others:
- What should be the laws of war, if any?
- Justification for initiating military force.
- Determining the targets in warfare.
- Choosing weaponry and considering the potential collateral effects.
- Establishing standards for handling military prisoners and addressing the refugee crisis resulting from such conflicts. This particular issue has become a point of contention in recent months, particularly due to the Syrian refugee crisis. It has also sparked far-right movements in Western Europe as a counterreaction to the perceived leniency shown by respective European nations towards the influx of refugees entering illegally through the Mediterranean Sea.
- Strategies for addressing violations of the laws of war.
- Building post-war institutions in affected regions to prevent the emergence of fertile grounds for radical forces to exploit and recruit unemployed youth.
