  • Dialectical materialism evolved by Marx is diametrically opposite to Hegelian dialectics. It seeks to explain everything in terms of contradictions of matter. Dialectical materialism provides abstract laws for natural and social change. Contrary to metaphysics, it believes that in Nature, things are interconnected, interrelated and determined by each other. It considers Nature as an integral whole.
  • Dialectical materialism declares that the law of reality is the law of change. There is constant transformation in inorganic nature and human world. There is nothing eternally static. These transformations are not gradual but there is a violent, revolutionary shift. Marx’s colleague Friedrich Engels put forward the following three major laws of dialectical materialism
    1. The Law of Unity and Conflict of Opposites: Objects and phenomena have internal contradictions, mutually exclusive tendencies that coexist and are interconnected. The unity of opposites is temporary and relative, while their conflict is eternal. Development arises from the struggle between opposites, leading to qualitative changes. This law posits that contradictions and opposing elements are not only interconnected but are also in a constant state of conflict and unity. The dynamics of change and development arise from the interplay between opposing forces. For example capitalist – labour relationship in industrial society.
    2. The Law of Negation of the Negation: This law suggests that the process of development involves a negation or contradiction of the existing state of affairs, followed by a subsequent negation of that contradiction. In essence, it emphasizes the cyclical nature of change and evolution.  Negation is an integral part of the development of reality. Each stage of development negates the old, incorporating some elements while introducing something entirely new. Development occurs through internal contradictions, with the new arising from the overcoming of the old. Raymond Aron (1965) puts it, capitalism is the negation of feudal society, and socialism would be the negation of capitalism i.e. negation of negation.
    3. The Law of the Transition of Quantity and Quality: This law states that changes in quantity eventually lead to qualitative shifts. As a certain threshold or accumulation is reached, there is a transformative leap in the nature or quality of the phenomenon under consideration. Change is continuous, characterized by a state of flux. Quantitative changes lead to qualitative changes when mature conditions are present. Qualitative changes involve the appearance or disappearance of something, while quantitative changes are diverse and continuous. The leap from quantitative to qualitative change is a fundamental aspect of development.  To give a concrete example, Indian national movement for freedom was continuing for more than a century leading to continuous quantitative changes and when it reached its limit there was a leap at the midnight stroke of the clock on 15th August 1947. India was a free country. Independence from colonialism was the qualitative change
